Wishing You a Happy Peaceful Holiday Plus Music News and Tips For My Favorite Holiday Havens in NYC!

This time of year for most of us is often bittersweet.   A time of reflecting, expressing our love through giving what we can and finding gratitude for all that we have.  In doing so, we are often reminded of those who have less.  Those who are grieving, or those who are suffering in any capacity. Especially right now, so close to home for me, I think of the families whose holidays are forever tainted by the recent massacre in Connecticut and the little ones who won't wait up for Santa on Christmas Eve or open their presents. My heart just breaks apart when I think of this.  For those of you not on Facebook, I made a request that we all just take a few minutes of silence to send healing thoughts and prayers to these victims and then extend it to the countless suffering people all over the world.  With this, may we all find deeper gratitude, love and appreciation for our current, fortunate circumstances and everyone in our lives.

As I'm home for the hustle and bustle of this holiday season in NYC, I thought I'd share with you who may be in the area, some wonderful havens of peace that I always enjoy!

1.  Meditation and Buddhism in NYC: 127 West 24th Street (between 6th & 7th Avenues)   Resident teacher, Kadam Morten, will be leading a special New Year's Eve mediation to guide us into 2013!  The center is open all day and evening if you just want to sit and meditate in the exquisite temple.  There are also drop-in classes with Kadam Morten and other great teachers all throughout the week at the main center and in various branches in the NYC area.  You won't be disappointed and you will walk out feeling a little more peaceful, compassionate and appreciative of your life.  :-)

2.  Rubin Museum of Art - while my 12/28 Naked Soul show there is sold out, the Rubin is a great place to visit any day of the week and the guided tours on the meanings of the Himalayan art are simply phenomenal.  The food in the cafe is great too.  :-)

3.  Life In Motion Yoga - on 105th Street & Broadway.  Every teacher for every level is amazing at this center.  I highly recommend April Martucci and Dani Zuccherie-LeRoy.  If you're new to Yoga you will get such great instruction in the exact, appropriate environment for learning this ancient practice.  If you're experienced and want a challenging class, take the Vinyasa.  Life In Motion really stays true to the authenticity of the practice and the philosophy behind it, in fact, April often gives a little inspirational talk just before class.  I also love the vibe of the studio.  For gym-haters who want a great workout that will heal the mind as well, this is the place!

4.  The Harlem Meer & Conservatory Gardens in Central Park.  Even in winter, these spots are magical and peaceful.  The Boathouse is pretty amazing for the vibe, food & drinks too! :-)

OK, I'm sure the guide books cover just about everything else like Gospel Brunch in Harlem; windows at Bergdorf Goodman; the fabulous museums, shopping etc The above mentioned are my favorite spots.  So enjoy a peaceful time in NYC for the holidays and any time for that matter!

Now for the News:

I'm going into the studio tomorrow to begin recording the NEW CD!  The CD will be released this spring on Ruf Records and I'm super excited about the musicians who will be on it with me!

Of course me and my songwriting partner/guitarist/co-producer, Jon Diamond along with NYC's best engineer Tim Hatfield, who will also co-produce. Tim has worked with many of the great legends, including Keith Richards, who has been quoted as saying, "Tim is one of the best!"
We also have...drum roll please....
Shawn Pelton on Drums - (look him up or just check him out on SNL any Saturday night!)  Shawn has played with everyone I love and made some of my favorite recordings.  The list is far too extensive.  It was a longtime dream wish-list of mine to work with him and I learned a month ago that all I had to do was ask!  It turns out he's a fan of "Across The Universe," which I'm sure helped a bit ;-)
Jack Daley on Bass - (Lenny Kravitz, Joss Stone, etc)  I recently got to do a show with Jack and we hit it off IMMEDIATELY, both personally and musically.
He and Shawn have also done many recordings together so I know they'll be one tight, rockin', monster rhythm section - and a BLAST to hang with for 5 days straight as we get our basic tracks down!

We'll be bringing back the extraordinary Glenn Patscha on Keys (Levon Helm, Roger Waters, Sheryl Crow, Ollabelle, etc).  Glenn is the guy that can play the sh*t out of any genre but it's always unique and quirky which makes him stand out above many great organ and piano players.

On Background Vocals, I will, of course, have my usual gals, The Diva Express! Vivian Sessoms (Joe Cocker, Pink & her own amazing thing!) and Jenny Douglas (Pink, Toto & many more).  They are the most soulful gals I know, both in voice and friendship!

We are aiming to get some other special guests but that will have to be a
surprise if it works out!
I'm really so grateful that I even have a reason to make this album!  It's because I have all of YOU who give me the gift of listening to my songs and my stories and sharing your stories with me.  You have no idea how much so many of you have influenced my songwriting and how all of you have influenced and will continue to influence and inspire my show, my life, my music and my heart.

Have a peaceful, beautiful holiday and to all of my friends and fans in the US, I PROMISE we are working very hard to see much more of you in 2013.  It's high time! Stay tuned for more info on this and things to come...

Much, Much, Love and Gratitude,

Dana

Across The Universe and Back Again!

I just got back from a SOLD OUT tour in Norway and spent my first night home in NYC at The Waldorf Astoria honoring the inimitable Julie Taymor, who was being honored at the Pratt Institute's 125th Anniversary Gala recognizing distinguished individuals in the creative world!
Of which, she is most certainly one!
I sang a few songs with my wonderful friends and 'Across The Universe' cast mates, Martin Luther McCoy and T.V. Carpio.   Also in this picture is Julie's brilliant beau, composer Elliot Goldenthal.   Afterwards, we hung out and had a little listening party of Elliot's latest musical masterpieces, including some new stuff that we all sang on! :) Great way to come home to NYC!
Now...I can't wait to get back to Germany and The Netherlands for my Fall Tour from October 25th through November 5th!

I'm thrilled to be adding the amazing Bob Fridzema on the keys for the German and Dutch Dates!   I've got the band primed to play a bunch of new songs for you from my upcoming CD...AND this will be my last run of  European performances for 2012, so I really hope to see you all at one of these special shows!

Where we love is home...

Where we love is home - home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts. -Oliver Wendell Holmes
I love having time off in NYC - especially up in my Harlem 'hood! Last night, I saw "Bird With Strings" play as part of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival at the amphitheater in Marcus Garvey park, which is right across the street from my apartment.
The scene was amazing. All walks of life sitting together on a breezy summer night listening to a super lush jazz orchestra. The vibe was energetic and conductor/composer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson
crafted a blend of classic and experimental arrangements with superb alto men Steve Wilson and Jaleel Shaw helming the horns. I ran into Miguel walking home through the park later last night on my way back from enjoying a pot of succulent steamed mussels provancal at one of my favorite bistro haunts. I gave him a shout out and a round of applause and he playfully bowed back to me in appreciation! Funny, I never had these kind of nights when I was living on the Upper West Side...
Anyway, I've been getting lots of pertinent questions from you all and I thank you for that, so here's the update: After we hit Eureeka, California next weekend for the Blues By The Bay Festival, we're taking time to focus on writing and recording our next studio CD for Ruf Records, which will be due out next Spring. We will be playing some choice shows this Fall in upstate NY, Norway, Germany and The Netherlands. Then, I'm back home to the USA just in nick of time to cast my presidential vote! :-) As for the acoustic CD "Broken Down" - it's done - however the head of our label wants us to hold on the release for the sake of strategy and since he's footing the bill for my music, I have to listen! (Those of you who are entitled to a a signed advanced copy I have not forgotten you!) The live show we shot in NYC last May is being produced and edited and we will likely hold off on releasing that until next year, as well. Delayed gratification, people! BUT, of course I'll be posting teasers of all the above so stay tuned. Lastly, please be sure to keep spreading the word and telling us where you want us to come and play for you. It's ALL about word of mouth for us out there and we can't survive without all of you and your beautiful mouths! Hope you're all enjoying the summer. Thanks, as always, for the support!
Love, Dana

You take the bad with the good...

It’s been quite the adventurous tour! First, I came to Norway for two festivals, Trandalblues and Skånevik Rock. On the second day, our 3rd flight in Norway to get us to the Skånevik Festival was canceled to due to heavy fog. We were still about 10 hours away by car because you can only drive so fast on the mountain roads. Not knowing what else to do we got on the bus that the airline was offering to all passengers who's flight in that direction had been canceled. After about 2 hours into the trip, the bus the driver stopped to buy everyone pizza! Can you even fathom this happening in the US when a flight is canceled because of weather? Anyway, as we were enjoying the pizza, we received a call from the promoter asking to speak to our driver. We were then informed that in about 2 more hours we would be met along the road by a private helicopter to ensure that the band and I made it to the festival on time for our set! All of a sudden I felt like Roberta Plant!
Flying over the mountainous fjords of Norway in a tiny helicopter is indeed a life changing experience.
We landed on a giant football field just in front of the festival tent and there were throngs cheering as we got out. Now that's arriving in style.
We had a great show that night playing just before Twisted Sister, who put on one hell of a rock show. Dee Snyder also gave me quite an awesome shout out from the stage and then we hung out with them all after the show. The whole Twisted Sister Crew is a bunch of super cool grounded dudes. Dee is a sweetheart and damn is he in great shape!
Later that night, I got violently ill and puked my guts out for hours! No, not alcohol related, as I wisely passed on all the free jugs of Jägermeister being passed around.
I figured it must have been something I ate. Fortunately, the next day was a day off in paradise! Upon waking, I felt well enough so I decided that a swim in the icy waters of the fjord would do me some good. After the initial shock of cold my body adjusted and it was just what I needed. I swam and floated and backstroked…ahh. Then I decided I'd better head back to shore before hypothermia set in. Just as I was nearing the shallow water I was enveloped by what felt like a massive bed of seaweed. It wrapped around my entire upper body from my neck to my waist. I started to brush it away when suddenly the most intense burning sensation began to cover my entire body. Holy f**k was it intense! Feeling near faint from the pain, I forced myself to swim faster to shore and as I hit the beach I cried out loud to some nearby Norwegian friends and strangers. It turns out I had been stung by a Lion’s Mane jellyfish, which is one of the largest species of jellyfish in the world.
Well I'll be damned, or burned for that matter, because I felt like I was Dante’s girlfriend on a hot date with my entire body burning for 9 hours straight!
All I could do was lie in bed sweating and burning…and intermittently sipping a little of the fine red wine that Twisted Sister had left behind. All I could think was how I had made such fun of those evangelical preachers who pounded on about the lake of fire with the gnashing of teeth when I was growing up to scare us young folk away from the depravity and sin of music and masturbation.
Maybe god is trying to tell me something right now? Anyway, I recovered somehow during a 14-hour travel day to Barcelona and two days later I was right as rain! Now it was time to enjoy one of my favorite European cities. I’ve been to Barcelona twice in winter and spring and loved it, but summer is a whole other deal. Hot, crowded, noisy and the people who work in the city are all so burned out on tourists and don't mind letting you know it! Maybe the custom of tipping should be adopted across Europe, in general? Talk amongst yourselves.
Well, after fighting through the hot, noisy streets at 8pm in search of my first real meal in days, we landed at a highly recommended tapas joint near Las Ramblas called Taller Tapas. Within 30 seconds of sitting down, I turned to get my purse, which I had just hung from the corner of my chair inches between Jon and I at the narrow bar, and it was gone! I felt nothing, I saw nothing and it seems no one else did either. The management and police, who just happened to be right outside, all pretty much shrugged it off saying, "Welcome to Barcelona."
I have to give it up for the stealth and speed with which this thief operated. What a Ninja! Hopefully, he used the money to feed hungry kids or a stray dog. Doubtful, but it hurts less to think of it that way. I just wish the thief had left my prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses behind! I would have taken him to the bank and given him more cash to get those back! Now, I'm penniless AND blind. Fortunately, that's a temporary situation for me and it could always be worse, right? The good news is we had a GREAT time on Thursday night playing our first show in Spain at La Festival Cultura Inquieta, just outside of Madrid. What an amazing setting and crowd. The Spaniards are a passionate breed of audience! They’re all heart and they all sing along so beautifully!!
Tonight, we rocked the crowd at San Javier Jazz Festival and tomorrow we have one more show in Bejar, Spain followed by 3 days off in Madrid then on to our final festival of this tour in Burg Hurzberg, Germany, where I have a bona fide stalker waiting for me. Stay tuned. After Germany, it’ll be time to come home and then hit some long awaited shows out West in the USA!
In summation, helicopters, food poising, jellyfish stings, sangria bien con los chicos de la banda and a helluva time playing music for great people all over the world. In the words of Charles Martin, “You take the bad with the good. Rise up through it. Live in the midst of it. It's the bad that lets you know how good the good really is. Don't let the bad leave you thinking like there ain't any good. There is, and lots of it, too. ” Love, Dana

Enjoy Every (F**king) Sandwich!

In memory of my dear brother Don and on this Memorial Day, to all who have given their lives to serve their country. There is no such thing as an unwounded soldier and the blood of heroes never dies. "Enjoy Every Sandwich" has become my new mantra after reading a book of the same name on a flight from NYC to Hamburg this past March 13th.
I am reflecting on Lee Lipsenthal's book "Enjoy Every Sandwich" now as I lay sleepless in Norway. My body is insisting that it's only 9pm when in European reality, it is in fact 3am. That, plus the heavy heart that comes from today being a year to the day that my beautiful brother Don lost his life to cancer. His last words to me were that he "just wanted to sleep for a while." That he did.
A gal named Amy Lipsenthal, who's been coming to my shows for a while, approached me after a recent show to say she had been moved by the stories of the loss of my sister and brother. She went on to tell me that she'd just lost her brother to cancer as well. She also told me that her brother, Lee Lipsenthal, had written a book during his final short fight. Lee was given a 10% chance to live just one year and he made it two years. Amy then gave me her brother's book and I promised to read it. Even though my carry on bag was way overloaded, I had to honor my promise and in the last moment before my airport taxi came, I jammed the book into my carry on. I spent the 9 hour flight immersed in this book laughing, crying, cheering and jotting down (as Lee suggests,) 3 to 5 things I am grateful for. A well-known and prestigious doctor, Lee shares his fate without sentimentality but with an emboldened look at death and how meaningful it is for life. He talks about taking his son on college interviews (days after getting the news with his son unaware,) realizing he won't likely see him graduate. He cries watching his daughter with her fiancée, knowing he won't meet his grandchildren. On a daily basis, he rejects his wife's recommended soup diet and her push for him to stop living in order to avoid dying. Prior to Lee's diagnoses he was a healer himself and used meditation and compassion as his premise for helping others as a medical doctor. When faced with his own mortality he accepts his fate. Not without grief, but certainly without a lot of fear, thanks to his practice of mediation on wisdom and compassion - what Buddhists call the 'two wings of the bird.'
Lee reminds us through every chapter to "enjoy every sandwich" and to be grateful for 3 things a day. I had to laugh because it is that simple - until someone cuts you off in a line, steals your parking space, etc. And it's that simple until someone you love is dying. However, it still IS that simple. A great teacher once said "change your mind you change your world." Ha! (ok, easier said than done.) I have had incredible adventures touring all over Europe and the US this past year and while I still carry a heavy heart for my brother Don's recent passing, I am always reminded of his and my sister Donna's dream of a career in music and am then washed over with gratitude that because of all of you, I get to keep living this shared dream. It's not the glamorous career I fantasized about when I was a little girl, but rather a life of sleepless nights, insane travel, bad hotels, friends moving on, missing out on family gatherings, crying often, eating too little, and rarely ever getting a "sick day!" But then there's YOU and the inspiration you give, the energy I feed off of, and the creation of music inside our own little "Church of Love," where we celebrate peace and joy and stomp and sweat together every night for a couple of hours!
In these hours, I am fortunate enough to meet people like Amy Lipsenthal, who gave me the gift of her brother's powerful book. I get to meet people whom I would have otherwise probably never known, and this alone has been a powerful game changer for me and my outlook on life and more importantly, death. All of you are what keeps me rollin' on. We will all die. We will all lose someone we love. Why not just enjoy every sandwich now? (Ok, tomorrow f*ck the salad, I'm going for a decadent panini!) :-) I am so grateful to all of you for welcoming me into your worlds, your hearts, your cultures and for sharing your personal experiences with me, often times after the show when I am supposed to just sign CD's and my tour manager wants to kill me! :-) You guys are My Sandwich! So let's rock and roll and bite the shit out of each other! Tomorrow, I have another day off and am going horseback riding through the Swedish forest with Piero, Walter and Jon. Then I will see my friends in Oslo for our SOLD OUT show! Now, these are some damn tasty sandwiches to enjoy and I look forward to sharing them with all of you as we meet along the road of our lives. Again, thank you for your powerful and profound support this past year. With Love, Hugs, Kisses and Big Big Bites! Dana
P.S. As I write tonight from Sweden, I am reminded to include an apropos poem. "In the middle of life, it so happens that death comes and measures a man. That visit is soon forgotten and life goes on, but the suit continues to be quietly sown." -Tomas Tranströmer Swedish Poet from his book "17 Poems" written in 1954

First off, I'm excited to see our friends in Ephrata, PA this Friday the 13th at the Ephrata Main Theatre.   It's such a great music room and we'll be joined by the great Tim Luntzel (Rosanne Cash) on bass guitar for this one.  Tim's a wild man on and off the stage so Lord only knows what will go down - but it will be jaw-dropping no doubt.

THEN….

…Sunday I head to the UK for 5 duo shows with Jon Diamond in support of the UK Release of Love To Beg.  We'll be sharing the bill with our Ruf Records label-mate, the young brilliant (and gorgeous) Oli Brown.

Kicking off on 4-17 @ Newcastle O2 Academy.

Then it's off to Italy and Holland for some festivals and club shows.

To see all the dates click here:

SO, WHAT ARE THE CRITICS  SAYING ABOUT Love To Beg?

Well, the reviews are in and they’re stellar!  (even the harsh UK critics are diggin' it)
Relix Magazine calls Love To Beg“ a must-buy … sparkling and lovingly crafted.”
Downbeat says, “Fuchs sings up a storm on her second studio album.”
And Classic Rock Magazine, UK writes, “…juke-joint dirty and illicit, evoking Joplin, Jagger, and a fag butt bobbing in a glass of bourbon …” (that one's my fave.)  ;-)

Simply head over to our Newly Updated Press Page to read all the full reviews AND THEN head over to our New Updated Music Page to listen to Love To Beg in it’s entirety!
You can also get the full streaming Albums Lonely For A Lifetime and Live In NYC.

Listen to everything and share with your friends via Soundcloud!

Iridium NYC this Sunday @ 8pm & Live Webcast!

NYC is where it all began for me, so just for you, I convinced the Iridium to allow me to do one 90 minute set for one price, as opposed to their usual policy of two 45 minute sets for double the price! :-)

This is a more economical proposition for you all and it allows me to stretch out and do my thing!

I have a very special night of music planned. Jon Diamond and I will anchor the night and we'll be joined on stage by virtuoso gentlemen Matt Beck and Jon Regen.
Seating is limited, so act fast and get your tickets here if you plan on coming to the show.

If you can't make it to the Iridium click here to see a Live Webcast of the show!

Here's a little about our guests:

Matt Beck is a prodigious musician who has toured the world with Rod Stewart, Joss Stone and Matchbox 20, to name a few and he holds it down every week on Broadway at Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark. Matt will display his immense talent on guitar, dobro, mandolin & accordion.

Jon Regen is a renowned pianist/singer/songwriter who has toured with jazz legend Jimmy Scott as well as Kyle Eastwood, and now fronts his own jazzy/rock trio touring the world!

The Iridium is a legendary room and I'm proud to play it for the first time so I hope you'll join us.

If you plan to view the webcast send me a note on Facebook so I can say hi!

See you there!

Love,
Dana

Here, There and EVERYWHERE!

Greetings from The Home Office in NYC!

New Friend

It was wonderful touring AND Walkin' in a (Scandinavian) Winter Wonderland!  Many shows were SOLD OUT and all of them were packed.  I had an unbelievable blast hanging with the band and our new friends on the off days.

Thank you Norway and Denmark for letting me spit and sweat all over you.  (Maybe it was a welcome heat from your crazy cold land?!)  ;-)

I am so excited to add Scandinavia to our new list of "homes" in this wide wacky world.

De-Icing the Wings

I must add a special thank you and praise to the pilots and crews of Norwegian Air.  I flew with them every single day on this tour and these pilots flew safely showing great aplomb in weather that would have crippled flights here in the States.  In short, they are Badasses to the last man and woman.
Smuggling Extra Carry on Baggage

I look forward to seeing you all again for some major festivals this summer (always check our tour dates please!)

I'm thrilled to announce new dates for shows in the USA!

Here are the imminent March dates:

3-02-12    Regatta Bar  - Cambridge MA (Special Duo Performance!) 8pm Tickets

3-04-12    Iridium Jazz Club - NYC Tickets 8 pm Tickets 10pm
I hope you'll come join and support us at our first show at the legendary Iridium!  This will be a very special stripped down show featuring yours truly, Jon Diamond, and special guests Matt Beck (Rod Stewart, Josh Stone, Spiderman on Broadway, Matchbox 20) on guitar, dobro, mandolin & accordian and Jon Regen (Jimmy Scott, Kyle Eastwood) on piano for two shows that night.

3-09-12    Mexicali Live – Teaneck, NJ (Full Band Show) 8pm Tickets
Our first time in NJ!  I hear it's a cool room and we will ROCK it with the full band!

We have many more US shows coming this spring and summer.  Plus, our NYC full band show and live DVD filming will be announced soon!  Then we'll be back in the Northeast, down South and out West so stay tuned!

It's back to Germany on March 15th for several shows there followed by our first shows in the Czech Republic and France!  I can't wait.   I've been doing tons of press and interviews for the upcoming shows and I'm getting great tips for what to do on days off in Prague and Paris.   I hope I'll find some new "homes" there!

Lastly, thanks to those of you ticket holders for your patience and understanding about our Sellersville PA show date change.  We had to accommodate a band member who needed to travel due to a family member's illness.

All Are Welcome
Again, life is short and precious SO LET'S CELEBRATE LIFE TOGETHER IN OUR CHURCH OF LOVE, PEACE & JOY where all of you AND your beliefs are welcome!  :-)

Peace, Love & Happiness,
Dana
